After crown and bridge work

Crowns and bridges usually take two to three appointments to complete. On the first appointment the teeth are prepared. Temporary crowns or bridges are placed to protect the teeth whilst restorations are being made.

After each appointment when the anesthetic has been used, your lips, teeth and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment.

You must avoid any chewing until the numbness has completely worn of.

On rare occasions crowns come off. If this happens, please contact the surgery.

It is normal to experience hot and cold sensitivity as well as pressure sensitivity after each appointment.

Your gums may be sore for several days. To help this we suggest you rinse three times a day with warm salt water to reduce the pain and swelling. Use medication only as directed.

To help keep everything in place, we suggest you do not eat sticky foods, and if possible chew only on the opposite side of the mouth to the on going work.

It is important to brush normally, but when flossing, you must be very careful, and remove the floss careful from the side of the crown to ensure you do not remove the crown.

If your bite feels uneven, or if you have persistent pain, please contact the surgery.
