Periodontal Surgery

When anesthetic has been used, your lips, teeth and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. You must avoid chewing until the numbness has worn off.

We advise you do not eat anything for at least two after the surgery.

It is normal to experience discomfort for several days after surgery. To control this discomfort we recommend you take pain killers (as per the directions on the pack). We strongly do not recommend taking any medication on an empty stomach as this may result in nausea.

After 24 hours, we recommend you rinse three times a day with salt water (tea spoon of salt in a cup of warm water) to reduce the pain and swelling.

If antibiotics have been prescribed, continue to take them until the course has been finished, even if all signs of infection have gone.

Slight bleeding is normal for a day or so following the surgery. If bleeding persists, apply firm pressure with a gauze pad for twenty minutes whilst elevating your head with pillows. Contact the surgery if this persists.

We recommend you eat only soft foods such as yoghurts, ice-cream, cottage cheese and soup.

You must avoid strenuous activities for a minimum of 24 hours after the operation.
