Snoring

The muscles and soft tissues in your throat and mouth relax while you sleep and this makes your breathing airway smaller. As the air flows more quickly through the smaller airway, the soft tissues in your mouth and throat vibrate and you start to snore. Sleep studies have shown that excess body weight, alcohol and other sedatives can make your snoring worse.

What types of treatment are available?

Surgery is usually recommended for severe cases of snoring but, for the majority of snorers, the most affordable, non-invasive and effective solution is a snoring prevention device, such as the Herner Appliance.

This appliance is made in a Laboratory from custom impressions of your mouth taken at the practice. The appliance is then fitted at a second appointment where we'll show you how to use it. Then, simply wear the appliance each night for a restful, comfortable and snore-free sleep.

How does the Herner Appliance work?

The Herner Appliance increases the airway space at the back of your throat by repositioning your lower jaw. This stops the soft tissues from vibrating and stops the snoring.

Does it hurt?

The device allows you to move your jaw slightly so you shouldn't experience any stiffness but your jaw may feel a little out of line when you wake up - this usually subsides within a few minutes.
