Fillings

There are two types of fillings: silver fillings made from amalgam and white fillings made from composite resin. There are several differences between these two types and the choice between white fillings and silver fillings is not just a matter of appearance.

See how beautiful these teeth look after removing the old fillings and replacing them with bonded white fillings. Besides looking better, these teeth are now more resistant to fracture.

After White Fillings

White (Composite Resin) Fillings

Advantages:

  1. White fillings provide a closer match the natural colour of your teeth.
  2. They are mercury-free.
  3. When white fillings are placed, less of the tooth is removed.
  4. They help to restore the tooth's natural strength and protect it from breaking – this can save additional expense in the future.

Disadvantages:

  1. White fillings are more expensive than silver fillings.
  2. The procedure can take longer and be more uncomfortable for the patient.
  3. White fillings can be weakened by excessive alcohol consumption.

Silver (Amalgam) Fillings

Silver Amalgam Filling

Advantages:

  1. Silver fillings are less expensive than white fillings.
  2. The procedure can take less time and be more comfortable for the patient.
  3. Silver fillings have a longer history of use, so they provide a tried and tested solution.

Disadvantages:

  1. Silver fillings look less natural.
  2. They contain mercury – which some people believe to be toxic.
  3. When silver fillings are placed, more of the tooth is removed.
  4. They can weaken the tooth and make it more susceptible to breaking – this can mean additional expense in the future
